Chinese Valentine’s Day

Have you heard of Chinese Valentine's Day? Chinese people have several different days for celebrating Valentine's Day, some based on the lunar calendar and others on the Gregorian calendar. One of these is the 15th day of the Lunar New Year, which falls on the 15th of February this year. The 15th day of the Lunar New Year is also known as the Lantern Festival and marks the first full moon of the new year and end of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Streets are decorated with colourful lanterns, fireworks fill the sky and people enjoy a bowl of sweet, glutinous rice dumplings – tangyuan/tongyuen. From our previous blogs, you may have noticed that these sweet dumplings are eaten during various celebrations throughout the year! The sweetness symbolises a sweet and happy life, their round shape symbolises togetherness and completeness, and its pronunciation is similar to ‘reunion’. All these make this auspicious dessert a must-eat on this day.

Why is the Chinese Lantern Festival regarded as one of the most romantic festivals of the year? In the ancient past this day allowed people to roam the streets unrestricted, enjoying the day and night free of curfews. Lanterns were inscribed with love poems, men and women dressed up and the dazzling lights lit up the sky – a very romantic atmosphere!
